Estrogen is incredibly protective and when it declines we lose its protection. This transition is considered an inflammatory event which lends itself to chronic inflammation which can affect many different organ systems. This means you are at greater risk of
- Osteoporosis - Women are 4x more likely to develop osteoporosis as men due to the fact that estrogen performs the important role of slowing down breakdown of bone. Bone tissue also has estrogen receptors that activate formation and increase production.
-Coronary Heart disease - This occurs when plaques made of cholesterol and fats builds up in the arteries reducing the flow of oxygen. This increases your risk for blood clots and heart attacks
-Insulin Resistance - This occurs when your body is less receptive to insulin leading to higher blood sugar levels. This elevated level can lead to low grade inflammation.
-Neuroinflammation - this occurs when inflammation occurs in the brain or spinal cord and can cause nerve cell damage essential to cognitive function. This can lead to Alzheimer's.
-Visceral Fat Gain - Visceral fat is considered harmful and active fat as it can release inflammatory proteins that can lead to low grade inflammation. It seems as though the combo of changes in diet and activity, decline in sleep quality and diminished estrogen leads to increases in visceral fat.
-Sarcopenia - Losing lean muscle mass can lead to body composition changes. Estrogen plays an important role in muscle tissue maintenance. Loss of estrogen can lead to decreased mobility and strength, increased fat mass and poorer metabolic health
